About Robert Misel
Architecture is unique in its ability to demonstrate equity. As architects, when we design spaces that are inclusive and accessible, we lead by example, and set the standard for how to create a better society. This leadership extends to the makeup of our own industry, and requires us to actively engage students, creating opportunities that signal the profession’s applicability, and its need for all voices, backgrounds, and perspectives. Because I believe so strongly in a professional community that is accepting and diverse, my role as both Architect and Partner is heavily devoted to the pursuit of equity; I am active in both AIA Seattle’s volunteer efforts, as well as Miller Hull’s Open Studio program that teaches BIPOC students how to successfully navigate toward a career in architecture. Over my 30+ years in the industry, I have also developed the skills necessary to manage complex criteria by leading large infrastructure projects like the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry, the C Concourse Expansion at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), and the U.S. embassies in Niger and Guatemala. Throughout these projects, I have overseen sizable teams and adeptly balanced quality control with communication so the client is kept happy and informed. While I enjoy these bigger ventures, I am equally appreciative of the day-to-day moments that come from managing the firm; the interactions, the friendships, the bond that comes from working on significant and meaningful projects with one another. I hope to always maintain the trust of my colleagues, and to ensure that camaraderie is abundant, respect –plentiful, and growth – a sign of progress that never wanes.
Experience
Partner
The Miller Hull Partnership, Llp
Jan 2016 — Present
As a Partner, I continue to focus on projects in our LIVE and SERVE market sectors, with an emphasis on market rate housing and mixed-use projects in California and the northwest and in ongoing work with our U.S. Gateways, which includes a variety of project types for both our Federal and local government clients. My role at Miller Hull has evolved into a firm management role, and I provide oversight of our Delivery group, Equity Lab, and for hiring and project staffing. At Miller Hull and in my AIA Seattle volunteer involvement, I want to be an advocate for a professional community of inclusiveness, diversity and gender equity. I\'m currently working to promote equity through Miller Hull’s Gender Parity Initiative and our Open Studio Summer Program, which is an introductory program and associated high school internship program for underserved high school students in the Seattle area who are interested in architecture as they go on to college. Projects included: C-Concourse Expansion, SEA, Seattle, WA International Arrivals Facility, SEA, Seattle, WA U.S. Embassy, Niamey, Niger U.S. Embassy, Guatemala City, Guatemala San Ysidro Land Port of Entry, Phase 3, San Diego, CA Parco (multi-family/mixed-use), National City, CA
