About Robert Huggins
My goal in life is to help others and my passion has been rooted in athlete performance and the improvement of athletic healthcare via implementation of health and safety best practices. My current work as a researcher is dedicated to studying how teams/coaches can monitor athlete performance via external stress monitoring technology (GPS/accelerometry devices) and blood-based bio-markers to best optimize training. In a more philanthropic realm, my work at the Korey Stringer Institute has been dedicated to working with organizations such as the National Athletic Trainers\' Association and the National Football League to improve Athletic Training related services to secondary schools and justify the cost of AT related services. Furthermore, my work at the Korey Stringer Institute has been to promote health and safety best-practice and policy change at both the secondary school and national youth sports level. My experience and special interest in the area of thermoregulation, heat illness, and the prevention of exertional heatstroke during sport and physical activity has been a passion of mine. Having studied at the University of Connecticut under Dr. Douglas Casa I have had the opportunity to work numerous medical events such as the Boston Marathon, Marine Corps Marathon, and Falmouth Road Race and I have treated and saved upwards of 30 patients with exertional heatstroke. As a PhD student and post-doctoral fellow, I have been involved with many studies related to temperature regulation, cooling products, and athlete performance monitoring. After my masters at the University of Virginia, I successfully started Club Sports Athletic training services at two separate universities in the state of Connecticut (Sacred Heart and UConn). These were the first two club sport positions in the state of CT and my experiences in helping to develop these positions helped to shape and mold my career as an Athletic Trainer and researcher.
