About Robert Hoffman
I am the co-founder of Khartis Therapeutics and serve as the CEO and Head of Research. Prior to forming Khartis, I was the Vice President of Chemistry at XinThera leading the discovery efforts of 5 Development Candidates and serving as a key participant in the business development activities leading to the 2024 acquisition by Gilead. Prior to XinThera I had a highly successful 32-year career at Pfizer where I had extensive experience serving as a Research Project Leader, people manager and serving in leadership roles on global multi-disciplinary science strategy teams to advance chemical informatics and drug safety initiatives. As a Research Project Leader I was responsible for project progression from concept to clinic. I am an inventor for the FDA-approved EML4-ALK/Ros inhibitor Lorbrena, three clinical candidates currently in clinical trials and six additional small molecule clinical candidates in the areas of CNS, virology and oncology. My research career in the pharmaceutical industry began as an undergraduate at Andrews University when I participated in the Summer Research Program at The Upjohn Company during 1987 & 1988. After completing a bachelor\'s degree in chemistry with Honors in 1989 I joined The Upjohn company as a chemist in the Medicinal Chemistry department within Discovery Research & Development. Over the next 14 years I remained at the Kalamazoo-based site increasing my roles and responsibilities. In 2003 I transferred to the Medicinal Chemistry Department at La Jolla, California within Pfizer global research & development. Over the next 18 years my responsibilities continue to grow taking on departmental, project and global leadership roles across PGRD. I have been fortunate in my career to work with amazing scientists and mentors that took a keen interest in developing my career. I have also been fortunate to receive the ACS Technical Achievements and ACS Hereos in Chemistry awards for my research efforts. Over the last 30 years I have continued to develop the skills and experience in the design and synthesis of complex organic small molecules within the paradigm of drug discovery against diseases of the Central Nervous System, Virology and for the past 12 years Oncology. As a medicinal chemist I work within a multi-disciplinary team and am responsible for the design molecules against targeted proteins producing disease. I utilize Structure-Based Drug Design, computational modeling and integrated data extraction, analysis & visualization tools.
