Responsible building stewardship is essential to providing future generations a sound built environment. Building Restoration and Preservation has formed my professional experience for over 30 years. Existing and historic structures are vital to our future. They represent the essence of how we maintain, improve, and interact with buildings. The are the litmus test of our creativity, making the arts, technology, craft, and materials into a symphony of use and beauty in our culture. Yet the historic preservation industry has been overshadowed by our age of consumption where \"new and disposable\" has become the new normal. Although a new time has come. The world\'s focus on renewable energy and sustainability is an opportunity for those who care for existing buildings, and build new ones. The idea that the \"greenest buildings in the word are already built\" is not new. The time for incorporating new technology into historic and existing buildings has come. Renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainability, AND longevity are easily achieved. Case study after case study validates that historic and existing buildings are the solution for reducing consumption, and must be part of the industry\'s main focus. Retrofitting buildings must consider each building individually, where each building\'s dynamic is matched to a prescribed method of intervention. Reducing energy demand and incorporating renewable energy are for new and old buildings, increasing our comfort while caring for our planet. Our future also rests with each of us. Training and education for consumers, craftspeople and children are how we become part of the solution. From traditional craft trades, to renewable energy, to responsible building, we must impart what we know and strive to learn what we do not.Heritage Restoration, Inc. is the culmination of my career and life goals where I seek to make a difference.
