About Robby Russell

Robby believes good software, and good ideas, deserve a second act.He has spent the past two decades helping teams sustain and evolve the systems they depend on. As founder and CEO of Planet Argon, Robby leads a team that helps organizations modernize and extend their Ruby on Rails applications rather than start from scratch. He also hosts two podcasts: On Rails — conversations with the people shaping the future of Ruby on Rails. Maintainable.fm — stories and lessons from those who keep software running smoothly over time.Robby is the creator of Oh My Zsh, an open source framework used by millions of developers to personalize and supercharge their terminal experience. And yes, he finally figured out how to sell stickers online, now found on laptops all over the world. His path into tech was anything but traditional. Growing up near San Jose, California, Robby dropped out of high school and taught himself to code so he could publish his music zine and sell punk and activist stickers. After a few creative detours, he moved to Portland, Oregon in where he became active in open source and activist communities. Soon after discovering Ruby on Rails, he co-founded Planet Argon to help teams work smarter with the tools they already had.Robby has spoken at conferences across the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America, sharing lessons on maintainability, modernization, and the human side of software.Outside of work, he is the founding guitarist of the instrumental rock band The Mighty Missoula, with four albums that explore cinematic themes of transformation and renewal. He is also a daily runner, traveler, and curious observer of how systems, human and technical, evolve over time.Whether it is a legacy codebase, a creative project, or a career path, Robby’s philosophy is simple:Preserve what works. Modernize the rest. Everything deserves a thoughtful second act.
