ABOUT ROB TORRES
I’ve spent 20 years doing the same thing at different layers of the technology stack. At Integra Telecom I mapped enterprise data networks — current infrastructure, every cost and touchpoint, every dependency — and then redesigned them visually with a new architecture. Nobody else was doing that level of diligence. I dominated the Pacific Northwest because I could show a CEO exactly where the costs lived and what the future could look like.I spent the next decade in financial services — retirement plan consulting, investment fiduciary, ERISA governance, defined contribution and benefit plans — learning a completely different industry from scratch. What I discovered is that the employee census is the most underutilized strategic document in most companies. It tells you who’s in the workforce, what they cost, how they’re structured, and where the risk lives. Most leaders never look at it through that lens. The methodology hasn’t changed. The layer has.Today I work at the labor layer — the space between a company’s AI and technology investments and its workforce economics outcomes. Every leadership team I talk to is sitting with the same three questions: Where do I begin? What will it cost? And how do I deploy it without disrupting my people? That’s exactly what I work on.We are entering a hybrid workforce economy where human talent and digital workers operate side by side. The companies that figure out how to design that workforce — not just buy the technology — will create significant competitive advantage. The ones that don’t will watch their margins compress and their best people leave.Workforce economics is where the greatest opportunity and the most risk live right now. I’m focused on that layer.Competitive Strategy · Labor Economics · Workforce Design · Governance · OperationsProud father of two. Fly fisherman. Golfer. Coach — Oregon high school football, O-line.
