He has developed a broad, diverse approach to architectural and planning practice that embraces past, present and future. His early career focused on research buildings for higher education and technology resulting in collaborations with higher education (Carnegie Mellon’s Center for Building Performance & Diagnostics) and Government (City of Pittsburgh’s Rehab Building Codes and early brownfield sites (Washington’s Landing and the Pittsburgh Technology Center). He has been deeply involved in a wide range of range of cultural and community based projects that have contributed to the City of Pittsburgh’s rebirth and resilience. Notable projects include the planning and design of brownfields and reuse of historic structures, Heinz History Center, Meadowcroft Rockshelter, The Carnegie Library, the Carnegie Museum’s Powdermill Nature Center and the new Gateway Light Rail Station in the center of downtown Pittsburgh. Current projects include the Forest Hills Municipal Building (a zero energy building) and the transformation and energy retrofit of the historic home of playwright August Wilson into a unique artist residency and event space. His contributions to the profession have been recognized with his induction in 2017 into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects.
