ABOUT REBECCA MURPHY
I am a Registered Professional Biologist (R.P.Bio.) and Marine Specialist with Hatfield Consultants, where I help design and deliver marine monitoring and habitat assessment programs across the Metro Vancouver area. My work spans from field surveys and environmental permitting to QA/QC and data analysis, with a focus on protecting and understanding coastal ecosystems. I am also part of our Social Committee, helping to keep our team connected (usually this involves good snacks). My marine fieldwork experience includes hydroacoustic monitoring, underwater video tow surveys, and marine mammal observation (MMO). I am a Full Member of the Marine Mammal Observer Association (MMOA) and experienced in small-boat operations (SVOP) for deploying and maintaining marine monitoring equipment in coastal environments. My freshwater experience includes side-scan sonar surveys for Sturgeon assessments in the Fraser River, electrofishing (Crew Supervisor), and river assessments following CABIN (Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network) protocols. I hold a CABIN Project Manager certificate and support biomonitoring programs involving benthic invertebrate sampling and habitat characterization. Before joining Hatfield, I completed my MSc in Applied Marine and Fisheries Ecology at the University of Aberdeen, where I researched fish behaviour and trawl selectivity to support bycatch reduction. I also hold a BSc (Hons) in Ecology and Environmental Biology from University College Cork, where I studied microplastics in intertidal invertebrates. I am passionate about translating science into practical, balanced environmental solutions, from supporting sustainable infrastructure to habitat restoration. Always happy to connect with others working in marine science, consulting, or ocean conservation.
