Data Scientist, Effective Communicator, Military LeaderI served in the United States Air Force for over 20 years, and in that time there have been common themes of my career that has spanned several duty stations, countries, and types of organizations.DATA SCIENTISTAs a former professor of statistics and machine learning, I have had the opportunity to work in many diverse fields consulting in biology, genetics, seismology, electrical engineering, and physics. I very much enjoy the opportunity to learn new fields and see how statistics and machine learning can be applied for prediction and analysis. I also know from my time as a test director at the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center the challenges of field data collection firsthand. When I served in the Pentagon, I experienced the difficulties in translating analysis into actionable policy and communicating it to executive leaders.CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATORMy first assignment was in bilateral relations working directly with the Japanese military, but in a sense, I have almost always been involved in some form of cross-cultural dialog. In addition to working with Japanese, Korean, and Iraqi military personnel, I often work in situations where I have to communicate technical perspectives to a non-technical audience. It is in communicating effectively that true policy change can be implemented.ROBUST LEADERSince my first years at the Air Force Academy leadership has not been optional in my career, it\'s a requirement. I\'ve had the opportunity to lead large field exercises involving hundreds of people and small analytical teams to analyze intelligence in combat deployments. My military career has afforded me many chances to refine and develop my leadership skills.
