About Ritu Raj Phukan

Meet the person who can’t even draw a mango but runs a creative agency. That’s me. Back in college, I faced a unique situation. My senior roommate, from a modest background, needed money to buy clothes for his sisters’ wedding. I saw him crying and learned that his parents were struggling too. So I created my first-ever marketing plot: organizing a trip for classmates and juniors to the world’s smallest river island, Umananda. Many joined, and after covering expenses, I handed the savings to my roommate. He cried. That moment was my spark. I realized I was meant for advertising and marketing. After 3 years in an ad agency, I founded Pencil Design Studio from my dining table in 2012. In 2017, with the unwavering support of my co-founder, Bornali Sharma, we formally registered Pencil as a company. Since then, our self-taught, tight-knit team has partnered with startups and businesses across Northeast India to craft branding and marketing communication that cuts through noise. In 2019, I discovered behavioral psychology and everything changed. We evolved into a psychology-driven creative agency, obsessed with why people buy, behave, and believe.
