I’ve spent most of my career building backend and distributed systems and interviewing engineers to work on them.Over time, something became hard to ignore. The way we interview engineers looks nothing like the work we actually expect them to do.We ask people to solve puzzles under artificial constraints and then act surprised when those signals don’t translate to real-world performance. Strong engineers get filtered out. Weak signals get rewarded. Hiring decisions become a gamble.I’m currently working on a stealth startup to fix this. The focus is simple but not easy: technical interviews that reflect real systems, real workflows, and real trade-offs, especially for backend, systems, and infrastructure roles.This isn’t an abstract problem for me. I’ve built production systems, reviewed senior engineers, and seen firsthand how often interviews fail both candidates and teams.If you’re leading engineering or hiring for senior roles and feel that current interview formats produce more noise than signal, we’re probably thinking about the same problems.
