About Jermaine Anthony Richards
Jermaine Anthony Richards is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Southern California\'s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the School of Cinematic Arts: Interactive Media and Games Division. His research focuses on how institutions of care process critical thought and practice. His objects of study are games; his critical media practice focuses on purpose-driven media, including games, and considers experimental media arts exhibitions that center on questions of global violence.Jermaine holds master\'s degrees from the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Southern California\'s Annenberg School for Communication, in Global Media (MSc), Global Communication (MA), and Communication (MA), as well as a graduate certificate in Science and Technology Studies. He earned his BS in Communications Technology: Digital Systems Engineering and Studio Art from the City University of New York.Jermaine held residence at the DC think-tank New America, where he contributed to the Digital Impact and Governance Initiative and the Responsible Asset Allocator program — first as a Research Associate on Public Finance for Digital Public Goods, and later as a DIGI Fellow, where he led research on digital public infrastructure in Southeast Asia\'s Lower Mekong Region (Cambodia, Viet Nam, Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand), in partnership with the Australian Government\'s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.As an award-winning producer and user interface and user experience (UI/UX) designer, Richards spent many years in the communication, media, marketing, advertising, and PR industries. He worked at McCann, FCB, Deutsch, and Wieden + Kennedy, and freelanced in London, Paris, Tokyo, and Amsterdam. He is also the producer and UI/UX of Hair Nah, a widely-taught, cited, and exhibited game that has appeared in the Smithsonian and has been acquired by the Strong National Museum of Play\'s private collection.Jermaine is the recipient of scholarships and fellowships from The Advertising Club of New York Foundation, the One Club for Creativity, the American Association for Advertising Agencies, the American Advertising Federation, ADCOLOR Conference (FUTURES), the University of Southern California, the New America Foundation, and the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans.Personal Website: and recommendations are available upon request.
