Fire Protection Engineer working under the NREL Fire Protection Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Responsibilities include the following- Acting as a subject matter expert responsible for ensuring compliance with fire protection requirements from organizations such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the International Code Council (ICC), Factory Mutual (FM), UL, and DOE contractual requirements such as DOE Order 420.1C and DOE-STD-1066- Working with NREL research directorates to establish fire protection requirements for research projects- Implementing fire protection requirements for semiconductor fabrication projects and hazardous production materials (HPMs) used in H occupancies- Acting as the primary fire protection subject matter expert for hydrogen projects. This includes interpreting and applying NFPA 2, Hydrogen Technologies Code. Project examples include metal hydride storage, hydrogen equipment enclosures, electrolyzers, gaseous hydrogen storage, liquid hydrogen storage, gaseous hydrogen dispensing, laboratory scale desktop hydrogen generators, hydrogen furnaces, various fuel cell research projects, and large scale subsurface hydrogen storage- Interfacing with NREL’s emergency services providing fire departments, including pre-incident planning for response to incidents- Writing new and updating existing Fire Protection Program procedures- Review of specifications, plans, parts submittals, and construction acceptance tests for fire protection systems and facility modifications- Writing fire system acceptance test procedures and directing tests in the field- Performing building fire protection assessments as required by DOE- Providing controls and oversight to minimize fire risk during field work activities- Delivering fire protection related training to NREL employees, such as fire extinguisher training, firestopping training, and hot work training.

I am currently working as a Fire Protection Engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. As a Fire Protection Engineer my objective is to minimize the risk of fire, and to minimize the consequences to human life, the environment, and property should a fire occur. I am currently pursuing the Professional Engineer (PE) license in fire protection and will also be pursuing fire protection certifications from the International Code Council (ICC) and National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) in the near future. My primary career goal is to become a well-rounded technical expert in fire protection.
