ABOUT RILEY MANGAN
I am a postdoctoral fellow in the MIT Computational Biology Group (PI: Manolis Kellis) and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. I am also a research fellow in the T32-funded Genetics Training Program at Harvard Medical School, co-advised by Dr. Manolis Kellis (MIT) and Dr. Jordan Smoller (MGH/HMS). My research interests span computational biology, disease genetics, comparative genomics, software development, machine learning, and complex brain disorders.I received my Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology from Duke University in 2023. As a graduate student, I discovered a set of genomic regions called HAQERs, which represent the fastest-evolved regions of the human genome. Many of these regions evolved through positive selection to forge new neurodevelopmental enhancers on the human lineage.I am dedicated to advancing genomics research through the development of high-performance software. Since 2018, I have been a lead developer of Gonomics, an initiative focused on creating open-source software libraries for genomics research in the Go programming language.I am greatly excited that new advances in genomics and machine learning can help us understand how mutations in human evolutionary history shaped our phenotypes, disease susceptibilities, and ultimately what has made us human.
