I just completed the Landscape Conservation and Restoration pilot project for the Southeast Natural Resource Leaders Group. The project is an innovative approach to natural resource protection that accomplishes three goals. First, a consistent approach to communicating across natural resource agencies that focus on the values embedded in funding objectives used to protect important natural, cultural, and social resources. Second, create shared tools to assist communities in protecting landscapes from identified risks. Third, create a common framework of accountability to leveraging resources. The project used essential attributes to link agency missions. These attributes support the funding objectives of improving ecological condition. The use of attributes also provided an organizing approach for data that organizations can use to visualize the landscape through geospatial tools that: assist efforts to visualize adjacent land attributes; identify potential impacts to the landscape from human and natural environmental risks; and evaluate how those risks can be addressed by supporting resiliency across the landscape. In addition, the attributes provide the basis for working at a regional scale and describe the environmental risks associated with climate change, urban development and other natural resource threats. Constraints on fiscal spending implore innovative strategies that fully integrate accountability of existing resources. The results provide agencies with an opportunity to enhance their missions through coordinated efforts with on-the-ground partners. Through the use of a common language developed in this effort, federal agencies can integrate diverse missions with a set of science based attributes that are essential to a healthy landscape. In addition, the framework enables agencies to target resources, engage stakeholders and establish performance measures that support leadership and accountability across the Southeast.
