About Rick Slaughter
API Committee on Petroleum Measurements Sub-Committee Chairman (Committee on Measurement Accountability)Multiple API Work Group Chairmanships during my years of API membership Mariner, AB, TankermanMember representative ASTMMember representative Energy Institute From humble beginnings. My introduction to maritime and measurements was deckhand on a mid-stream fueling and fleeting service on the Mississippi River. Back in the days before fixed rigging on barges, when it was carrying ratchets and wire rope to make tow. Very much, a make you or break you job. To advance my career, I attended a now defunct school of maritime studies, “The National River Academy”, in Helena, AR. Received my tankerman, AB, and wiper endorsements from the United States Coast Guard. I joined Texaco Marine in the late 70’s as a tankerman, running unit tows between Port Arthur TX and Marrero, LA.A few years later family life dictated moving shore side, so I applied with, and was hired by an inspection company. Turns out, I was a decent inspector, didn’t mind the hours, or the weather, and handy with the numbers. I progressed through the inspection business to various management positions before crossing over to the producer side. With the help of a strong team, launched a robust and extremely efficient loss control department for a company, who at the time was just getting its legs under them. Joined API and took advantage of all the experience that was available to soak up as much knowledge as possible. There are far too many contributors to my measurement education than I can name here. But you all know who you are and that I am very much appreciative of your guidance through the years. As a manager, from inspection companies to loss control departments for oil companies, I have led teams of as few as three to as many as eighty plus. To this day, I take advantage of each opportunity to learn more, do more, and go further. I know that throughout all these years it been a love, hate battle. Unfortunately for me, I speak my mind, and have a hard time being just another, yes man. I am truly grateful for this life God has given me and the people who have helped me along the way.
