During my last year of Active Duty, I attended the Self-Sponsored, Part-Time Police Academy in Bradenton, Florida. I then spent the following three plus decades as a Law Enforcement Officer with the Lauderhill Police Department and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. I was fortunate to spend the majority of my career doing the two jobs that I had a passion for, being assigned to the Homicide Unit and the S.W.A.T. Team. Although I received numerous Commendations, Citations and Awards during my career, those individual recognitions are not even close to being the achievement that I am the most proud of. The highlight of my career has been being a mentor and a positive influence for thousands of other law enforcement professionals and helping them achieve their goals. Being a mentor and helping somebody achieve their goal of getting into a specialized unit, or helping somebody do well on a promotional exam and receiving a phone call from them that they have been promoted, or providing guidance to somebody and helping them solve a case or assist somebody in obtaining a confession, or receiving a phone call that a person who had struggled with managing money had achieved a savings goal with their 457 account, etc. Those are the true highlights of my career. I have been blessed to receive numerous phone calls, texts, and emails like those through the years from former students and fellow colleagues thanking me for being a positive influence in their life. Those moments far outweigh any ribbon, medal, or award that I have ever personally received. The thousands of former students, colleagues and citizens on the streets that I have crossed paths with may not remember all of the things that I said or did, but I can promise you that they remember how I made them feel. I sleep well at night with how I conducted myself during my career. What I accomplished personally is not that important. The important things are what I have done to help others accomplish great things!To my fellow LEO\'s still out there, please STAY SAFE!
