About Richard Riche Otey

I’ve spent most of my career around commerce in one form or another. Retail, media, e-commerce. What keeps standing out to me is how often things stop working not because people didn’t optimize enough, but because they optimized past the point of making sense. We’re incredibly good at measuring things now. We’re much less comfortable trusting judgment. And in a world where every product is one click away from a competitor, that imbalance shows up fast. That’s why I spend a lot of time focused on live shopping and social commerce. Not because they’re shiny or new, but because they bring something important back into the buying moment: presence, context, and human connection. Live shopping works because people don’t just want better information. They want to understand who they’re buying from and why it exists in the first place.I don’t believe growth comes from better math alone. I believe it comes from familiarity, trust, and narrative built over time. The things that are hardest to put in a spreadsheet are often the things that actually create durability. This is also why I see media differently than most people. Media isn’t just marketing anymore. It’s infrastructure. Brands that build their own audience and show up consistently are not just selling products. They are reducing dependency on paid channels and creating long-term leverage.AI only reinforces this. It makes execution faster and cheaper, but it does not tell you what is worth doing. As tools become universal, taste, judgment, and clarity become the real advantage. Most of the work I’m involved in sits at the intersection of commerce, media, and culture. Live shopping, social commerce, founder-led brands, and trust-based growth models are all part of that conversation. Sometimes that looks like advising. Sometimes it looks like operating alongside teams. Sometimes it looks like longer-term partnerships where perspective and pattern recognition matter as much as execution.I believe capitalism works best when it is not treated as a zero-sum game. Variety, creativity, and human difference are not inefficiencies. They are what keep systems resilient and businesses relevant. If you’re thinking seriously about live shopping, social commerce, or how attention and trust actually turn into revenue over time, we’re likely already aligned on more than you think.
