Full Stack Engineer @Equal Experts

View department →

Working via Equal Experts for the Passport Office (HMPO) on their Digital Application Processing project. The goal is to replace their legacy system. When I joined, the project was very mature, the new system already handling the vast majority of passport applications, and the focus is on adding the remaining use cases so that the legacy system can be retired. As such, the need was for someone to grab an oar and start rowing, which is mainly what I\'ve been doing. I\'ve used my wider technical and leadership experience where it has been helpful, but mainly I\'m working as an individual contributor. Tech stack is services built in Java and React. The contract has been extended until August 2025.

ABOUT RICHARD WILD

What I mean by seeing the big picture is, I\'m not purely focussed on tech. I always try to understand the context in which the software runs, and in which it is developed. This means I try to know not just how things are built but why they were built that way, what are the business processes and social norms in the organisation. This helps me bridge the divide between \"business\" and \"tech\" and work with stakeholders in both camps.I’m a polyglot developer with commercial experience starting in 1998. I cut my teeth building applications on Oracle databases for several years, crunching data with PL/SQL. I went on to pick up many other languages including C, Javascript, Java, C#, Groovy, Clojure, Kotlin along the way, as well as frontend experience in React, eCommerce experience with Hybris, devops experience in AWS, Terraform, Ansible, and Jenkins. My main technical depth is in the JVM stack but I can readily learn new technologies at need. I\'ve practiced test-driven development (TDD) since 2013 and I specialise in automated testing, using various tools, but especially JUnit and Cucumber.I have experience consulting and in delivery management, leading teams and engagements. I’m a skilled communicator and I have long been accustomed to working with users and stakeholders at all levels directly, both in a formalised process and not. I’ve worked in a variety of fields in addition to eCommerce. I keep abreast of what\'s new but I also properly understand certain legacy technologies that are still used in use in the field, notably: relational databases, and Java web technologies.I solve problems with well crafted software. In my opinion, code is as much a liability as it is an asset, so it should be spent wisely solving the right problem. Therefore I always strive to understand the problem thoroughly. I also try to inspire other developers, teach them the practices that I use myself, and help them develop in their own careers.
