ABOUT RICHARD WESTGARTH
I have a track record in looking at future leading-edge concepts, developing strategies and plans for the long term, building on a background in research and innovation supplemented by wide experience in change management and consultancy. I have worked on large change programmes alongside major management consultancy organisations, providing change management consultancy, lecturing on change management, briefings senior management and facilitating large multi-organisational workshops. Experience includes working in large corporations and founding a start-up Engineering Consultancy. My expertise in maritime projects includes research and development, design and engineering management and consultancy roles. This work has included support to the UK MoD providing strategic business advice leading an adviser team supporting a major multibillion pound programme. I have led Strategic Planning for a division in a FTSE 250 Company and providing strategic planning advice to a Future Programme Team in Whitehall. Current activities include working with MaritimeUK to create a Maritime Research and Innovation Centre and the development of a Maritime Sector Strategy designed to optimise maritime futures. As a lead author of the Global Marine Technology Trends reports, I have a perspective on disruptive and emerging technologies and their application in the maritime environment. As BMT’s Industry Engagement Manager, I am currently looking at Digital Transformation, Intelligent and Autonomous Systems, quantum technology and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and their implications on the Future of Work and organizations. I am an Adjunct Professor at the University of Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and sit on their Transport Executive, a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufacture and Commerce. Outside of work I am a keen mountain walker, play guitar and enjoy travelling.
