About Richard Smith
How do you do? I work for Carpenter Technology Corporation, a producer of specialty alloys. Our product line includes Ni-based, Fe-based and Co-based superalloys, stainless steels, tool steels, titanium alloys, magnetic and expansion alloys. Product forms include ingot, bar, coil, sheet and powder and our primary markets are defined as: aerospace, power generation, medical, industrial, consumer and automotive. I work in the R&D department, mainly supporting what we call the primary end, which uses the EAF/AOD process route for melting of raw materials (such as scrap and ferroalloys), refining and casting into ingot or continuous cast billet. The melting capabilities of Carpenter also include vacuum melting and remelting processes such as ESR and VAR to produce material with a high level of cleanliness and a consistent microstructure. My activities include process improvement work involving the use of thermodynamic modeling software, statistical-based analysis of process data, models of ESR and VAR remelting processes as well as inclusion analysis of various alloys using an automated SEM.
