About Richard Formato

I am a visionary leader in thermal packaging with extensive experience in research, development, and engineering. I hold a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an M.S. from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, both with a focus on Thermal and Fluid Sciences. I have guided complex technologies from concept through full-scale manufacturing and am the named inventor on 32 issued U.S. utility patents, with four more pending. My innovations span phase change materials (PCMs), electrochemical systems, thermal simulation tools, and packaging technologies. In senior roles at Microtek Laboratories (MTL) and Cold Chain Technologies (CCT), I have led the creation of high-impact thermal solutions. At MTL, I invented and scaled a patented in-situ ultraviolet (UV) gelation method for phase change materials (PCMs)(U.S. Patent 12,162,978), which supports the Adaptek 365 CRT platform. I also developed compostable refrigerant systems and led technical diligence for the acquisition of Latent Heat Systems. At CCT, I drove the development of gelled PCM technologies that enabled sustained double-digit revenue growth and contributed directly to the company’s acquisition by Aurora Capital. I also introduced a proprietary simulation platform that reduced validation cycles and expanded access to high-value markets. Earlier in my career, I held technical and leadership roles at Reactive Innovations and Protonex Technology, where I contributed to innovations in electrochemical systems, fuel cells, and advanced coatings under government-funded research and development programs. What sets me apart is the ability to turn complex scientific concepts into practical, manufacturing-ready technologies that deliver measurable business value. I combine technical expertise with a results-oriented mindset, ensuring that innovation aligns with operational and strategic goals. I have led cross-functional teams focused on intellectual property and regulatory compliance, consistently producing breakthrough products that strengthen market competitiveness. I introduce structure, direction, and foresight to every stage of the development process, translating ideas into dependable, high-performance systems for real-world use.
