Heat Integrated Reactive Distillation (HIRD) was demonstrated at the pilot-scale for esterification of citric acid to tri-ethyl citrate. The economic analysis indicates significant potential savings in CAPEX and OPEX over the conventional batch processes. Now the technology is being applied to synthesis of to Di-2-ethyl-hexyl succinate (DOSX), one of the leading bio-based plasticizers replacing petroleum-based phthalates; as well was the separate development for Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC) synthesis. DMC is an electrolyte used in Lithium-ion batteries.
