ABOUT RICHARD CUERDEN
I have worked in the field of applied road and vehicle safety research for 25 years and lead a diverse portfolio of research and consultancy projects. I am honoured to be the Director for the TRL Academy, which differentiates TRL within the market place. TRL does not have shareholders and is truly independent and impartial. It is a privilege to oversee and guide our ongoing investment into original and applied transport research, ranging from PhD students to large scale research and evaluation studies. I am excited about the potential societal, environmental and economic improvements that can be made to our cities and towns through the next generation of transportation and mobility solutions – including Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) and electric vehicles integrated into the Smart City agenda. This will be supported by technology and data advancements and be applied by cross-cutting policy, linking multi-sector organisations and stakeholders - a revolution for transport and Mobility as a Service. My role is to ensure TRL remains relevant and is ready to help provide the services and products that our current and new customers will need.Safety is paramount to all that we do - preventing unnecessary injuries and deaths on our roads. Work I do in this area includes chairing the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) Vehicle Design Working Group and I am a trustee for the road safety charity Brake.
