ABOUT RICCARDO LATTANZI
I am a Professor of Radiology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering at New York University. I serve as Director of the Bernard and Irene Schwartz Center for Biomedical Imaging at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and Director of the Ph.D. program in biomedical imaging and technology at the Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences.Research: My work lies at the intersection of physics, engineering, and medicine. I develop new techniques and technologies to improve the diagnostic power of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Rather than using the MR scanner merely as a camera for beautiful images, I treat it as a scientific instrument to extract quantitative information about biological tissue noninvasively. Quantitative MRI, combined with AI-based analysis, has the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, enable earlier disease detection, and support more precise and personalized clinical decision-making.Science Communication: Beyond my research, I communicate science to broader audiences. With experience writing for the Italian newspaper \"La Stampa\" and other Italian publications, I am now expanding my focus to AI in healthcare, bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and public understanding by addressing both the promise and the limitations of these technologies in clinical practice.Recognition: I am the recipient of the ISMRM I.I. Rabi Young Investigator Award, an NSF CAREER award, and a Fulbright scholarship. I was selected as an Aspen Junior Fellow of the Aspen Institute Italia, a Young Leader of the Council for the United States and Italy, and a European Young Leader by Friends of Europe.Education: I received my laurea degree in electronic engineering from the University of Bologna, my Master of Science in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT, and my Ph.D. in medical and electrical engineering from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.Research Interests: Magnetic Resonance Imaging, AI in Medical Imaging, Quantitative MRI, MR-guided Radiotherapy, Electromagnetic Simulation, Machine Learning, Radiofrequency Coil Design, Electrical Properties Mapping
