ABOUT RICCARDO BALLARIN
I got a bachelor degree and a master degree in biomedical engineering respectively from the University of Padua and from the Polytechnic University of Turin. Since the academic period, I took an interest in image processing while I was preparing my master thesis related to the ultrasound technologies for vascular assessments. As a consequence, I started my professional career within the same scope as a field service engineer with Sea Vision S.r.l, a small Italian company placed in Pavia city which was focused on vision systems software development for pharmaceutical customers. Due to my job duties, I traveled in Europe, Africa and Asia to create customized optical character recognition and serialization inspection tools for packaging machines and to qualify (FAT/SAT), according to GMP rules, the parameters set. Considering that most of the time those business trips were solo ones, I improved my relational and planning skills, together with technical ones on how to elaborate digital images on purposes. In 2021 I moved to Stevanato Group company, placed in Piombino Dese city (Padova city area), as a commissioning engineer to improve my knowledges in automation field since I was assigned to the automatic visual inspection manufacturing department. Considering my background, my role was mainly focused on image processing for visual inspection purposes to analyze the external and the internal (i.e. particulate detection) appearance of vials, syringes and cartridges. Thanks to the results obtained during the pandemic crisis with SARS-CoV-2 vaccines inspection systems I developed, ThermoFisher Scientific hired me to join vision systems department as a specialist. My duties were mainly related to all site\'s vision systems monitoring, new inspection tools creation or old ones optimization and qualification protocols issuing, execution and review (IQ/OQ/PQ). Over time, my assignments were changed: I was fully involved into new projects introduction, specifications and documentations creation and review, customers support, process deviations management, corrective actions decision and change controls management. To extend my field of business, I joined technical operations department as a specialist to support and train all sites ThermoFisher Scientific employees on sterile area troubleshooting.
