About Ricardo Alves Monteiro

Ricardo Alves Monteiro, born in 1991, grew up in Cascais, Portugal. Ricardo holds an undergraduate degree in Economics (2012) and a Masters of Science (MSc) in Economics with a major in Finance (2014), both from Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics under the “Top +” scholarship. During the undergraduate degree Ricardo had his first professional experience in an internship with Microsoft Portugal (2012). After that, during the MSc, Ricardo started woking as a teaching assistant at Católica Lisbon. The position was held for 6 years, from 2012 to 2018, teaching students at the undergraduate and graduate levels in courses ranging from microeconomics and macroeconomics to finance and statistics. In 2017, Ricardo was a lecturer at ISEG, teaching the course Fundamentals of Financial Economics at the graduate level. While doing the Masters’ thesis, in 2014, Ricardo did an internship with EY as a junior consultant, where he was part of a team in a project in the Porto branch. He was chosen to represent Portugal in the International Internship Conference held in Orlando. This was Ricardo’s second international experience following his participation in the Erasmus program, where he spent one semester abroad in Budapest, as part of his undergraduate degree. Also during 2014, Ricardo participated in a joint project Portugal Próspero between Católica-Lisbon and the newspaper Expresso and was in charge of fundraising for MOVE, a non-profit that provided micro credit for potential entrepreneurs in African countries. After finishing his MSc in Economics Ricardo spent 4 years (20••••18) working as a consultant for UTAM - Unidade Técnica de Acompanhamento e Monitorização do Setor Público Empresarial, a technical unit of the Ministry of Finance of Portugal. From July 2018 Ricardo started his PhD in Economics at the University of Minnesota as a fellow of the College of Liberal arts. In his second year he was awarded the Harald Uhlig award in Macroeconomics and invited to hold the teaching assistant position for macroeconomic theory, a first year graduate course. 2020 was full of new projects and adventures. Ricardo spent one year working at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, as a Research Assistant in the Economics department. At a personal level, in July, Ricardo and Sofia, his wife, had their first baby boy. From 2021 until now, while finishing the Ph.D, Ricardo kept teaching at the University of Minnesota and as of now is a research assistant for Professor Manuel Amador.
