ABOUT MAURICE JOSEPH NUTT

Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Father Maurice J. Nutt, C.Ss.R. has been ordained a Roman Catholic priest in the Redemptorist Congregation for 34 years. He earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Preaching from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis; a Master of Theology Degree from Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, Louisiana; a Master of Divinity Degree from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Illinois; and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy and Communication from Holy Redeemer College in Waterford, Wisconsin. In June of 2001, he completed the Leadership Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He served as Pastor of Catholic parishes in St. Louis & Memphis. From 20••••14 he was a full-time preaching evangelist and member of the Redemptorist Mission Preaching Team based in Chicago, IL. He was appointed Director of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans where he also taught theology and preaching courses from 20••••17. He is Convener of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium, a national interdisciplinary association of Black Catholic scholars. Father Nutt is a Consultor on the Extraordinary Provincial Council of the Redemptorists – Denver Province (20••••27.) Currently, Father Nutt is preaching missions, revivals and retreats. He was appointed by Bishop Joseph Kopacz of the Diocese of Jackson as the Diocesan Liaison to the cause for canonization of Sister Thea Bowman. Father Nutt is the author of Thea Bowman: In My Own Words, Advent and Christmas Wisdom from St. Alphonsus Liguori, and Lent and Easter Wisdom from St. Alphonsus Liguori. He contributed to the African American Catholic Youth Bible, published by St. Mary’s Press in 2015. He published Thea Bowman: Faithful and Free in 2019. He is the author of Down Deep in My Soul: An African American Catholic Theology of Preaching (2023,) and co-editor of Preaching Racial Justice (2023.) He has also published many articles about preaching, theology, evangelization and social justice. Rev. Dr. Nutt’s areas of research and interests include pastoral theology, homiletics, African American culture, and the intersectionality of the Church and the work of justice. Dr. Nutt is a 2022 inductee in the International Board of Preachers at Morehouse College. He is a proud active Life-Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.(Follow Fr.
