About Renata Schiavo

Renata Schiavo, PhD, MA, CCL is a global health practitioner and a public health/sociomedical sciences academic with a deep commitment to public service, health equity, community engagement, and systems-driven solutions. She is a Senior Lecturer at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, Department of Sociomedical Sciences, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Communication in Healthcare: Strategies, Media, and Engagement in Global Health, and a principal at Strategies for Equity and Communication Impact (SECI), a global consultancy. She is the founder and board president of Health Equity Initiative, a nonprofit volunteer organization, and serves as Senior Editor of the Journal of Health Equity, and on the editorial board of Health Equity. She also leads an international summer professional development program on \"Health and Risk Communication in Pandemics and Beyond\" at The American University of Rome. Dr. Schiavo is the author of Health Communication: From Theory to Practice (Wiley), and 85+ publications and 190+ scientific presentations. She is the lead editor of Health Equity: Strategies for Action (Wiley), to which she also contributed several chapters. Renata is a passionate advocate for health, racial, and social equity and a committed voice on the importance of addressing barriers that prevent people from leading healthy and productive lives. She has experience working in the United States, and several countries in Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Eastern Asia. Her work is at the interface of global health, health equity, health and risk communication, social and behavior change, health policy, multisectoral partnerships, systems thinking, and community and patient engagement. A multi-award winning professional, Renata is an articulate communicator with strong subject matter expertise, as well as leadership and teamwork skills and experience in the academic, nonprofit, publishing, and corporate sectors. She has significant academic experience at the graduate and undergraduate levels, including teaching, curriculum design, program direction, community-campus partnerships, and student advising.
