ABOUT REENA OBMINA
I’m a Computer Science and Bioinformatics student at the University of Toronto in the ASIP (Co-op) Stream who is passionate about using computation to understand and improve the living world. My work is a mix of molecular biology and software engineering, and I love building tools that make scientific data easier to explore and visualize!🧪 What I\'ve worked on:• Analyzed prairie biodiversity and extinction dynamics using R and Python, integrating 200+ field transects to understand population stability, environmental variance, and species dominance patterns• Built end-to-end data pipelines, from cleaning and preprocessing large ecological and genomic datasets to generating reproducible visualizations, dashboards, and statistical models• Developed interactive Shiny applications that transform complex biological data into accessible tools used by researchers studying ecosystem resilience and species persistence• Created bioinformatics services for the Bio-Analytic Resource (BAR) using Flask and SQLAlchemy, modernizing access to 5+ TB of curated plant genomics datasets and reducing manual preprocessing for dozens of labs• Designed predictive and accessibility-focused software, from machine-learning epidemiological models to an adaptive NLP typing assistant for users with communication barriers🧬 What drives me:• Curiosity about how algorithms, statistics, and biological systems intertwine, and how computational tools can reveal hidden structure in ecological or genomic processes• A love for interdisciplinary problem-solving: writing clean, efficient code, debugging pipelines, building clear UI flows, or learning new wet-lab techniques like PCR, DNA extraction, and gel electrophoresis• A commitment to research that is rigorous, reproducible, and meaningful, especially projects that help make complex scientific data more transparent, intuitive, and impactful Looking ahead:I’m excited by opportunities that combine biology, computation, and design, whether in bioinformatics, health tech, ecological modeling, or research that pushes scientific discovery forward through better data, better tools, and better questions!Always open to opportunities, feel free to reach out if you\'d like to connect, collaborate, or learn together!
