Seasoned professional with a proven solid track record in the production and R&D of optical thin films, designs, metrology, material characterization and over + hours of hands on coating time. Extensive experience in the R&D and production of reactive DC magnetron sputtering on optics ranging in size 5mm substrates up to 1.5 meter diameter mirrors. Background includes evaporation materials and coatings from UVVISNIR and IR (248nm to 10.6 microns) on numerous substrate materials. Have worked with coatings using resistive, electron beam, IBS, IAD and magnetron sputtering deposition processes as a technician and engineer. Program Management for optical fabrication, polishing, testing, verification, integration and final assembly. Responsible for writing RFP for Proposed Production, Cost and Schedule Information Final Design Review Narrative for M1, M2 and M3, FDR Optics Acceptance Test Plan, FDR Configuration Item List, FDR Warranty Services, Plans for Shipping, Storage, Installation and On-Site Testing, Configuration Management Plan, HATS Handling and Transportation System, MRO System Surface Roughness Measurement, Radius of Curvature Testing of MRO Optics, Wavefront Testing of MRO Primary Mirror and Radius of Curvature Measurement,Wavefront Testing of MRO Secondary Mirror,Wavefront Testing of MRO Tertiary Mirror.Mr. Schmell directed coordination between the US Air Force (USAF) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to ensure completion of the Desert Storm Lidar systems for testing and deployment before the start of the Gulf War.
