About Rebecca Sosa
I work at the intersection of storytelling, social justice, and mental health. For the last 15 years, I have worked cross-functionally in business development, communications, marketing, operations, partnerships, and sales for entertainment media companies and nonprofits of all sizes, from emerging startups to industry-leading organizations, including indie film studio A24, AMC Networks, Sundance Institute, and SXSW Film Festival. Driven by a higher calling to contribute my skills to a larger cause, I founded my own consulting practice, Empowered Stories, to support socially impactful projects produced by people from marginalized groups. More recently, my passion for mental health has led me back to graduate school, where I am completing my master’s degree in clinical psychology and professional licensure (MFT & PCC). This invaluable clinical experience enables me to strategize from diverse, multicultural perspectives. My specialized coursework includes career counseling, psychological trauma, and decolonizing psychedelic-assisted therapy. I was originally drawn to a career in film because of the power of storytelling to influence and inspire. But storytelling, I have since realized, is not limited to any particular medium. From the stories we form about ourselves in childhood to the stories we absorb from our environment, personal narrative is the foundation of our mental health. It impacts how we view the world and imagine its possibilities. As a first-generation Latina graduate, and as I have learned from my entertainment career, representation matters. It is my intention to expand mental health literacy and access within BIPOC and creative communities and destigmatize it across generations and cultures.
