ABOUT REBECCA PEABODY
In addition to my work at the Getty Research Institute, I write for both academic and popular audiences. My trade book, Life and a PhD: Doubts, Detours, Departures and Other Success Stories is a collection of first-person stories recounted by former graduate students who have successfully reached the other side of a PhD - and are willing to speak frankly about the challenges and decisions they faced along the way. My scholarly work focuses on twentieth-century American art and culture, and in particular, on the use of narrative in representations of race, gender, and nationality. My scholarly publications include Consuming Stories: Kara Walker and the Imagining of American Race (2016), the edited or co-edited volumes Lawrence Alloway, Critic and Curator (2015), Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles Art 1945 – 19••••11), and Anglo-American Exchange in Postwar Sculpture, 1945 – 19••••11), as well as essays in journals, edited volumes, and exhibition catalogs. I have taught at Yale University and the University of Southern California. For more information, please visit my
