Plan Institute believes communities become more hospitable, caring and resilient as a result of the contributions of people who are marginalized and their families. Our goal for the future is to be the leading influence on caring citizenship in Canada, recognized for improving the lives of people with disabilities, their families and their communities.It is our mission to reduce the isolation and loneliness of people who are marginalized and ensure that the gifts and contributions of all members of a community are welcomed. We improve the lives of people living on the margins of society and enrich their communities by creating opportunities for mutually beneficial relationships and partnerships to form. We promote the leadership and participation of people with disabilities and their families in helping us to revitalize our communities. We do this by creating opportunities for dialogue, collaboration and partnership.

ABOUT REBECCA PAULS
I bring a relational approach to leadership grounded in community, care, and collaboration. My work has been shaped by decades of experience alongside people with disabilities and their families, and by a deep belief that communities thrive when everyone is seen, included, and able to contribute their gifts.As Executive Director of Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network (PLAN), I lead a Vancouver-based social enterprise that partners with individuals and families facing social isolation to build personal support networks, foster inclusion, and plan for the future. Since joining PLAN in 2015, I’ve worked to deepen and expand our planning practices, building on a strong foundation to incorporate person-centred thinking, asset-based community development (ABCD), narrative approaches, and independent facilitation. This work reflects a shift from service delivery to relationship-building—and from individual responsibility to collective care.I’m regularly invited to support organizations in applying these approaches to broader populations and systems change efforts. I also serve as a faculty member with the Asset-Based Community Development Institute at DePaul University in Chicago.My leadership is grounded in lived experience—as a mother of four, as someone who has worked in communities across Canada, and in countries including Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Guatemala. I now live in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood, a community known for its creativity, diversity, and social innovation—where I continue to build, listen, and lead in partnership with others.
