ABOUT REBECCA B. SNUKAL K. C.
I am a King’s Counsel Senior Criminal Defence Lawyer at Snukal Law and Strategic Criminal Defence, an association of independent law practices. Together, we form a Full Service Criminal Defence Law Office with central offices across Western Canada and Ontario. With over 20 years of experience in criminal law in Alberta and having defended thousands of clients, I provide seasoned legal advice and a rigorous defence. My practice is founded on the belief that every client deserves my best work. I pride myself on a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system, having represented numerous high-profile sexual assault and homicide cases. I apply robust defence strategies to each case, emphasizing both formative behind-the-scenes work and persuasive court presentations. My writing and research capabilities are as vital as my oral advocacy and problem-solving skills.I am particularly known for my court presence and cross-examination skills, approaching each cross-examination uniquely and with special care for sensitive witnesses such as children. Throughout my career, I have handled or overseen more than criminal cases, many reported in the news and legal journals. My trial lawyer skills have been recognized by the Calgary Police Service, where I taught officers how to testify in criminal defence trials at the Crowfoot Learning Centre. I have also played an instrumental role in numerous professional associations, aiding individual clients and enhancing our justice system. As Vice President of the Calgary Defence Lawyers Association (CDLA) and defence representative for the Provincial Court Implementation Committee, I’ve addressed multiple issues related to the Provincial Court – Criminal Division. I have worked collaboratively with prosecutors, judges, and other criminal justice participants to enhance the efficiency of both Provincial Court and the Court of King’s Bench. Additionally, I served on the Legal Aid Society’s Appeal committee, ensuring appropriate representation for those unable to afford a lawyer. My involvement in various organizations illustrates my ability to work with diverse communities and individuals, mirroring the demographics seen within criminal law. These experiences and my passion for justice inform my role as a lawyer, as I strive to serve both my clients and the community.
