ABOUT REBECCA A. SHARPLESS
Rebecca A. Sharpless is a Professor of Law at the University of Miami School of Law, where she has taught immigration law and directed the Immigration Clinic for over 15 years. She is also the author of the new book Shackled: 92 Refugees Imprisoned On ICE Air, a heartrending legal thriller that exposes the brutal mechanics and consequences of deportation in the United States. As a lawyer, teacher, and scholar, Professor Sharpless is passionate about advancing the rights and dignity of immigrants and refugees. She represents indigent noncitizens in removal proceedings and litigated in federal courts, challenging the abuse, discrimination, and unlawful enforcement of immigration law by state and federal officials. She has also engaged in human rights advocacy and fact-finding, documenting the impact of post-earthquake deportations to Haiti and the shackling and mistreatment of Somali refugees on a botched ICE Air flight. Her research and writing focus on the areas of immigration law, progressive lawyering, and the intersection of immigration and criminal law. She is a frequent speaker and an award-winning leader in the immigration law community, serving as the president of the South Florida Chapter of AILA and a board member of the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild.
