As my career progressed after college, two things became clear to me; 1) There is no job safety/security in being an employee anywhere, and 2) There is little chance of obtaining long-term financial security with a single W2 job given our high cost of living, our progressive tax structure, and the paltry returns for average investors in the stock market.I’ve found that career diversification, and multiple streams of income, are the keys to not being beholden to the employment whims of any single employer. My approach to this has been to blend W2 employment for benefits and a small base salary alongside one or more 1099 entrepreneurial activities.Long-term financial security means different things to different people, but at the most basic level, an eye towards not having to live in poverty during retirement should be a goal of most people, but it isn’t as most people stake their retirement revenue solely on collecting social security.With these thoughts in mind, I’ve structured my career around work and financial diversification, which takes time, discipline, sacrifice of immediate gratification, and a lot of hard work.I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to work on the things that I like to do; educating young people and being involved with many facets of real estate, as well as and giving back through my volunteer work with Rotary International.
