I’m a lazy Mathematician. And here’s why your company needs me.My junior year of high school, we learned to divide polynomials. Yeah, you all remember it (and if you don’t, then lucky you). There was nothing I dreaded more than homework that had me doing long division over, and over, and over again, which is exactly what I had that night.So instead of doing said long division (estimated time of completion: 2 hours), I decided I’d find a better way- a more efficient way of dividing polynomials. I figured if I could learn a different method in 20 minutes, and do the homework in half the original time, I’d be saving 40 whole minutes! Now, it’s beside the point that this process ended up taking me more like 3 or 4 hours to teach myself synthetic division (and that my teacher was not-so-happy that I’d found a loophole in the system). Despite the extra time that night that I committed to developing a new, more efficient method of doing my homework, this strategy has certainly saved me a lot of time since. Hence, the mathematician inside of me was awakened. Everything can be done more efficiently; everything can be done bigger, better, faster. I have been committed to this in all areas, not simply in my math classes.I develop this skill in my programming classes (C++) and in my Coding Theory and Operations Research classes. There are harder codes to crack, quicker ways to solve a linear programming problem. I am developing it at my work in the St. Joseph County Cyber Crimes Unit. There are forensic programs that process more types of evidence, methods that streamlines case analysis. I am developing it as I work with my Baraka Bouts Boxing Club teammates. There are more efficient ways to train, better ways to fuel my body.It may take a short-term time and energy commitment. But sacrifice now drives company growth and puts you on the leaderboard of your market.So if you want your company to be at the cutting edge of your field, then you need a lazy mathematician. If you want your company to be at the forefront of innovation, then you need me.
