About Raymundo Lopez
If your mind can conceive it, and your heart can believe it - then you can achieve it.” My high school football state champion coach used to embed this Muhammad Ali quote into our young heads. My journey in exemplifying this cliché saying led me to accomplish my childhood dream of becoming an engineer – by leaving the comfortable California Central Valley in pursuit of adventure and opportunity at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Being thousands of miles away amplified my realization of the underrepresented and vastly untapped potential within minorities in STEM across the US. With the support of like-minded individuals, I’ve been fortunate to cofound the UAF Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Chapter, the National Society of Black Engineers Chapter, & the SAAB Brother to Brother Organization. All have been the first in the state of Alaska, with aims to improve the STEM retention rates among minority students. From each experience, I’ve continued to learn about the importance of servant leadership & communal success – by overcoming challenges, bestowing a helping hand to ensure equal opportunity, and breaking statistics that have plagued generations. I now work with bp’s Gulf of Mexico asset as a Deepwater Drilling Engineer to safely fuel the world’s demand for inexpensive and reliable energy. With this position, I aim to learn and equip myself with the tools to improve communities and future generations – through bp’s Net Zero ambitions and through my own reflections coming from one of the least educated areas in the US.
