About Ray Matsumoto
I am an incoming PhD student in history at UCLA, specializing in modern Japanese history, Korean diasporic studies, memory studies, international relations, and the history of education. My research interests stem from my background as a Japanese national who attended international schools and the grandson of a Zainichi Korean (Korean in Japan). I also received my master\'s in history and a former teaching assistant at Washington State University, where I published my thesis,\"Constructing Identity Through Power: Analyzing War Responsibility Discourse Through Zainichi Koreans and Abandoned Japanese Settlers in Manchuria.\" Along with my academic work, I have experience in the non-profit, international relations, and human rights advocacy sectors. I am an associate historian for Pacific Atrocities Education, a former Asia Program research intern at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and a former intern at The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea. In addition, I have volunteered for numerous organizations, including the American Red Cross. My research specialties include East Asian diplomacy, migration policy, historical redress movements, and education policy. I am also the author of ECHOES OF EMPIRE: THE POWER OF JAPANESE PROPAGANDA (Pacific Atrocities Education), a thematic analysis of the history of official and unofficial Japanese propaganda between 1868 and 1945.
