ABOUT RAWAN ELSHOBAKY
A curious, passionate Egyptian student who has been traveling across continents to learn more and make a positive change in the world! Being passionate about contributing to positive change on a large scale. I traveled all the way to South Africa to join the African Leadership Academy where I could collaboratively work with inquisitive people to make our continent a better place! Aspiring to grow my open-mindedness and public speaking there, I joined the International Relations Council where my colleagues and I discussed political dilemmas from various perspectives. Coming from a STEM background made it hard to adapt there. Regardless, I took it as an opportunity to expand my horizons. After months of asking questions and reading The Economist, I could finally enjoy the complexities of the international relations (IR) world. In fact, I even combined my passion for STEM and interest in IR to chair the African Scientific Research and Innovation Council in the continent\'s greatest Model African Union conference to lead debates regarding promoting scientific research to improve medical services. Aiming to have an even bigger impact and be a part of a more diverse community, I joined the first research university in the US, the Johns Hopkins University! I am utilizing the university\'s valuable resources and network to combine my interests in Molecular & Cellular Biology and Computer Science. So far, I have partaken in multiple computational research projects related to medicine and public health (e.g. COVID and cancer). I am dedicating the skills I have been cultivating to focus on issues I am interested in, such as precision medicine and global health. I am particularly interested in exploring global genetic diversity to improve complex disease predictions across ancestries through a PhD in biomedical informatics after my undergraduate degree at JHU!
