ABOUT RAÚL SAN JOSÉ ESTÉPAR
I am Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and co-director of the Applied Chest Imaging Laboratory at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where my work bridges imaging science, artificial intelligence, and clinical translation.My research focuses on developing and validating quantitative imaging biomarkers that advance our understanding of chronic lung diseases and support precision medicine. As the original developer of the Chest Imaging Platform—an open-source toolkit for CT-based lung phenotyping—I have helped establish scalable solutions now used in large multicenter studies and clinical trials worldwide.Our lab serves as the imaging core for major NIH- and industry-funded initiatives, including COPDGene, the Framingham Heart Study Pulmonary Research Center, the CARDIA Lung Study, the ALA Lung Health Cohort, and RECOVER. We are advancing AI-driven methods for mucus plug detection, airway disease, pulmonary vascular remodeling, and synthetic lung functional imaging, while integrating imaging with molecular and genetic data to develop predictive models of disease progression and treatment response.I am a member of the Fleischner Society and the recipient of the Distinguished Investigator Award from the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research. Beyond academia, I co-founded Quantitative Imaging Solutions, a healthcare technology company translating imaging-based AI solutions into clinical practice, including tools for lung cancer risk prediction.I am passionate about building collaborations across medicine, engineering, and industry to accelerate innovation in imaging, create meaningful endpoints for clinical trials, and improve care for patients with lung disease.
