ABOUT RASGADO-FLORES HECTOR

Dr. Hector Rasgado Flores is Professor at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago. He is the director of outreach, diversity and Success at the Chicago Medical School. He studied a Masters in Neurosciences at the CINVESTAV (Mexico) and a Doctorate at the CINVESTAV and the University of Maryland. He also studied piano performance and composition at the National School of Music (UNAM). His scientific research is on membrane transport, cell volume regulation, Cystic Fibrosis and the effects of music on brain function. This research has been supported by the NIH, American Heart Association (AHA), Novartis Pharmaceuticals, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.As an educator, he developed a multimedia concert-presentation “Brain, Music and Sense”, which led him to be named in 2011 the “Santiago Ramon y Cajal Professor” by the UNAM (Mexico). He has also received on three occasions the Golden Apple Award and was named “Master Teacher” in 2012 by his University. He was commissioned to write a symphony for the American Physiological Society about the human physiology:\"Body Notes\". He was also commissioned by the Colegio Nacional (Mexico) to compose a Suite for piano about the Chemical Elements (\"Suite Los Elementos\"). These works have been performed in several countries. In science policy, he has been the Chair of the International Physiology Committee of the American Physiological Society, Member of the U.S. National Committee for the International Union of Physiological Sciences, and Chair of the Research Council of the AHA. As a promoter of science in Latin America, he founded the Society of Latin American Biophysicists, and also served as its president. As a promoter of higher education for minorities in the U.S, he developed the INSPIRE, Science Saturdays, peer-tutoring and the Individualized Strategic Enhancement Program program at his University. In 2018, he was named by the Mexican Government \"Distinguished Mexican\", a distinction conferred to 30 Mexicans around the globe living abroad.
