Sholai School is a small residential learning community situated on a 70-acre campus in the hills of South India, close to reserve forests in the Palani range. Founded in 1989 by Brian Jenkins and inspired by the educational philosophy of J. Krishnamurti, the school explores education as a way of living — where learning is rooted in awareness, inquiry, and relationship rather than instruction alone. We follow the Cambridge International curriculum (IGCSE and A Levels), while equally emphasising experiential learning that extends beyond the classroom. Students learn through dialogue, shared responsibility, physical work, and close engagement with nature and community life. The campus supports a multicultural environment, with students from across India and abroad, ranging from ages 3 to 19. A student–teacher ratio of approximately 5:1 allows for close interaction and personalised learning. Life at Sholai includes shared meals prepared from produce grown on campus, participation in organic farming, and engagement in daily community activities. Food is sourced from our own cows, farm, and seasonal organic cultivation wherever possible. Education extends beyond academics through field trips, hiking, camping, sports, and creative expression. A unique whole-community sports league brings together students, teachers, and staff in mixed teams, emphasising participation over competition. At the heart of Sholai’s approach is an inquiry into what it means to live with clarity, intelligence, and responsibility, without dependence on ideology or imposed models. We see education not as preparation for life, but as life itself.
