ABOUT RAMESWAR PRASAD SAH
I think about the impact of my work in two closely connected ways: whether the science we generate translates into improved rice varieties in direct-seeded rice (DSR) systems, and whether the students and young researchers I mentor go on to succeed in their scientific careers. At ICAR–Central Rice Research Institute, my research focuses on genetics and plant breeding for DSR, with emphasis on early crop establishment, seedling vigor, seed quality traits, weed competitiveness, and yield stability under resource-conserving production systems. I work at the interface of field-based phenotyping, quantitative genetics, and genomics-assisted breeding to dissect and improve complex traits critical for DSR adaptation.A central objective of my work is to ensure that research outputs move beyond experimental plots and translate into breeding strategies, parental selection, and varietal development suited to farmers adopting DSR across diverse agro-ecological conditions, through close engagement with multi-location trials and national breeding programs.Alongside research, I am strongly committed to capacity building and mentorship, supporting students and early-career scientists in developing skills for DSR-oriented breeding and applied crop improvement, and contributing to the long-term sustainability and resilience of rice-based production systems.
