October Books is a not-for-profit, co-operative independent bookstore and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027. It’s much, much more than a bookstore. It’s a community hub, a meeting place, a place of learning and a place of reading for pleasure, it’s where authors come to launch their books, where poetry open-mic nights are held, where volunteers cook up free lunch every Monday from veg and fruit donated by local grocery stores. It made the national news when, a few years ago, it moved premises several hundred metres to take on the freehold of an old bank and members moved the entire stock book by book, hand to hand along the length of the high street. I’ve been a customer since moving to Southampton and I’m delighted to join the committee to help the next stages of its development.
