Clinician, academician, educator and researcher Prof (Dr) Rajvardhan Azad embodies these qualities with a self-assurance that comes through expertise and experience in the field of eye care for over 35 years. His commitment to teaching, research and patient care brought his way facultyship, professorship and the chiefship of the Dr. R.P. Center for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS. Having placed so high he quit is cozy job of chief of R.P. Center to serve needy, downtrodden poor and have –nots of the country. Inspired by his father Mr. Bhagwat Jha Azad, who was a freedom fighter, political, social worker, member of parliament, union minister and Chief Minister, Prof Azad got inculcated the values of service to mankind which he practices too as an eye surgeon. As an advisor to National Blindness Programme of Government of India, he not only formulated and reviewed the programme but instituted and pioneered Childhood Blindness program especially Retinopathy of Prematurity and in the process gave vision to future of India’s generation. He is called father of ROP movement in India. He is the first from India to achieve the most coveted and prestigious post of the President of Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, a body of more than Ophthalmologists of World. He is a named Honorary Physician to the President of India. Known as Dr. Azad to his patients, Raj and Rajvardhan to his friends, he brings refreshing tinge of tropical key opinion leader with Global vision. A vitreoretinal surgeon par-excellence. He is the most popular icon/ideal of younger generation of ophthalmologist and an envious darling to all fellow ophthalmologist and colleagues.
