ABOUT RAIMAN AL-HAMDANI

Outside of academia, I have interned, worked, and volunteered in some of the main organs of international development. During college, I worked at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Sana’a while volunteering with orphaned developmentally challenged girls at the Al-Tahadi institute. Post-grad, I interned at the Yemeni Mission to the United Nations, where I sat in on the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Additionally, I have extensive practical experience working directly with refugees. In Yemen, I spent weeks working with East African refugees and migrants at the Al-Haradh refugee camp, on the northern Yemeni-Saudi border. In Egypt, I volunteered as an English teacher for Ethiopian and Sudanese refugees at an Episcopal church. Throughout college and graduate school, I oriented much of my coursework towards issues of development in Yemen. As an undergrad, I researched and submitted a proposal on tribalism and water conflicts in northern Yemen. In preparation for this, I travelled extensively throughout Yemen conducting ethnographic research. Visiting remote villages, often in tribal areas, many without access to electricity or Internet, I saw firsthand how ordinary Yemenis struggled with underdevelopment. The second part of my graduate thesis examined the potential role of the Yemeni tribe as a collective actor in the country’s post-conflict reconstruction.
