About Rahul Shah
Extensive investment experience on the buyside working in long only and hedge fund constructs. Escalating responsibilities over time and extensive knowledge of sectors such as energy, materials and consumer discretionary. Prior to joining Red Spruce, Mr. Shah worked for investment management firms Nuveen Investments and AlphaOne Capital. Prior to the buyside, he worked in management consulting at Monitor Company and GeoPartners Research. He also has small business/start-up experience in fundraising, business development and deal negotiation. Mr. Shah\'s investment approach rests on the belief that industry structures determine inherent company profitability. One must understand the context first, and then analyze individual company strategies to assess a firm\'s outlook. Financial models are important to stress test assumptions and underpin valuation. Focus as much time on balance sheet and cash flow as income statement, since \"pinpointing\" earnings is oftentimes a high input/low output exercise. Try and separate signal from noise and look for best ideas, not names that fit into labels. Best names have attractive valuations and strong/secular end market growth outlooks.Specialties: Asset management/equity research, sector specialization in energy (E&P, services, integrateds), materials (metals/mining, agriculture, speciality chems, industrial gases), media/entertainment.
