The Department of Sociology Aligarh Muslim University, with the support of the Centre for Criminology and Justice, School of Social Work, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, has initiated a project called “WAFI” Welfare Actions for the Incarcerated. Since its inception in 2017 by Dr. Shereen Sadiq, with the help of student volunteers, WAFI has focused on inmates at Aligarh district jail. The program serves as a catalyst in both legal and social spheres, providing essential aid to bridge the gap between the court system and the families of prisoners. Additionally, WAFI aims to sensitize students to the realities of the criminal justice system, fostering awareness and understanding among future stakeholders.Activities:“WAFI” conducts various activities to fulfill its mission:1. Legal Aid Helpdesk: Legal aid helpdesks are organized to provide inmates with legal assistance and guidance. These sessions handle numerous cases, actively supporting and assisting those in need.2. Family Outreach Programs: WAFI facilitates communication between inmates and their families, providing emotional support and strengthening family ties. This effort potentially reduces recidivism rates by aiding smoother reintegration into society. The WAFI team visits prisoners\' homes to gather comprehensive information for further legal proceedings, recognizing that understanding the broader context is crucial for effective assistance.3. Awareness Workshops: Students participate in workshops and seminars highlighting the challenges within the criminal justice system and the plight of incarcerated individuals. These awareness workshops are vital in promoting inclusion, empowerment, and social justice, uplifting marginalized sections of society.
